Planning Editing Styles - Miss Geourgiou

A variety of editing styles is essential within a music video as it contributes to the overall effect of the music video, whilst ensuring that transitions are able to take place within the video within a format which both makes sense to the audience and is physically appealing to them. Without applying editing styles to a music video it would make a lack of sense as the audience would be unable to follow the narrative and understand it, i.e the different scenes which music videos are known for going back and forth between would make little sense as the audience wouldn't understand how this transition was made or even why it was made?  Hence not only would the audience not be able to follow the actual narrative but they also wouldn't be able to note what various aspects of the music video represent etc. It is important to display a variety of different editing styles so not to bore the audience. Although the average length for a music video differs between four to five minutes which may not appear to be a long time, but when watching the same thing for this entire period of time if the same editing styles are being used often the audience feel as though the experience is being dragged out. Therefore making for a less pleasurable experience for the audience, meaning that the music video shall not be as sufficient in doing it's job of promoting both the song which the music video is paired with and the artist as the audience connotes this negative experience with the artist tarnishing how they view them in future instances.

One editing style I plan to use within my music video is continuity editing. An editing style which is often used within music videos which the audience are made unaware of, continuity editing simply refers to a system of cutting which is used in such a way to display a clear and continuous narrative. Hence being conventional towards the soul genre as it enables the artist in providing the audience with their chosen narrative for their music video. Thus engaging the audience with the story-line meaning that they shall benefit more from the experience the artist is creating for them possibly finding it more relateable hence building a stronger relationship with it as well as the artist. This encourages the audience to grow a further likeness towards the artist as they recognise them with this positive experience. Benefiting the artist as it means that the audience are more likely to look out for their work in the future as they feel this closer bond with the artist meaning that they have therefore become more interested in them. Allowing the audience to closely follow a narrative also encourages them to obtain a greater understanding  for the lyrics within the song as often the narrative portrayed with a music video either follows that of the song or is symbolic of it. Not only do music videos provide a visual experience and image for the audience to place with a song but it also provides them with another outlet to comprehend a further understanding of an artists work. This further understanding builds upon the bond between the audience and the song and therefore also building upon the relationship between the audience and the artist. Continuity editing is a techie which is used throughout various different music videos including that of my chosen artist Amy Winehouse. (Including my chosen song 'In my bed') Continuity editing is conventional towards the soul genre as it aids the  artist is telling their narrative behind their music video which follows codes and conventions of the soul genre as it is known for telling stories as well as trying to make their music as relateable to the audience as possible. Often avoiding the concept of their fame an fortune and referring to universally relateable issues/problems. Continuity editing can be displayed throughout our music video as rather than using a editing style to show the artist entering a different location we can actually show her doing so on screen for instance she could enter into this new location through a door etc. This technique will work for the party scene as the audience sees the artist moving around the party entering different rooms and encountering different people whilst trying to avoid her lover and enjoy her night.

Examples of continuity editing in music videos:

Amy Winehouse 'Stronger than me'

Amy Winehouse 'In my Bed'

Duffy 'Well Well Well'

Arctic Monkeys 'Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?'

I also plan to use a shot reverse shot editing style so to show the relationship between the artist and the ma she is singing about. I plan to do this at the party scene where the artist is seen getting close to several men at the event. Portraying to the audience how little the artist cares for this man whilst also showing how much he cares for her. This is beneficial as it highlights more of the narrative to the audience  as they are able to see how much the man is suffering due to his affections towards the artist as well as how over him is truly is. As well as signifying her annoyance with him which is referred to throughout the lyrics; "I'm not gunna meet you're mother any time" here Winehouse is informing her lover that she is interested in him in no more than a sexual manner. Hence this technique is conventional towards the genre as again it applies further knowledge to the audience on the matter of the lyrics. Helping to strengthen the audience experience with the song building a greater relationship with it as well as the artist themselves. This shot will go from he artist behaving in a flirtatious manner showcasing her facial expressions as she appears happy and content, certainly not taking into account the fact that she is being watched or possibly even aware at first. Then the shot shall reverse onto the man whose facial expressions shall demonstrate to the audience that he is not only upset but also angered by the artists behavior showcasing that for him the relationship has more to offer. Encouraging the audience to obtain a great understanding of both characters and allowing for sympathy to be applied to either character possibly both. This forces the audience to become more involved with their experience of the music video as they are creating opinions for the music video therefore they also have feels invested  into the video therefore meaning it has been successful in engaging with the audiences attention and shall maintain it throughout the rest of the music video as the audience want to discover the out come.

Examples of a shot reverse shot within music videos:

My chosen artist also displays the use of a shot reverse shot within her music video 'Stronger Than me'. Noting these elements to Winehouse's music video is beneficial to be as it allows me to feel safe in the knowledge that I am capturing a music video which is able to display a true representation of the artist and her work.As well as informing me that I am successfully aiding the codes and conventions of the soul genre to my music video.

Throughout Hilary Duff's music video 'Stranger' there are various uses of a shot reverse shot for instance the scene where the artist walks into her lovers office to find another woman there. As well as when the woman and the artist look at each other as she leaves the room and various different examples around the table where the artist is seen her lover flirting with another woman and they release she is noticing.

Again Within Britney Spears' music video for her song Radar' shot reverse shots are used between Spears and her love interests. Noting on this I realise how conventional it is to use shot reverse shots for lovers or love interests within music videos.Due to this I am considering using shot reverse shots between the artist and the men she is seen flirting with so to build tense and really highlight what is happening between them plus this shall showcase how little she cares for the previous connection she shared with the male she is singing about.

Within Mario's music video for 'Let me Love you' the use of shot reverse shots are also made between the artist and his love interest for the music video.

I also plan to make the use of jump cuts throughout my music video so to highlight the transition between different scenes within my music video. For instance from the scene where the artist is singing in her bedroom to the scene where she is performing on stage continuity editing may not realistically be used. As these locations are clearly far away from each other, also the artist shall be in completely different costumes for the two scenes, and a completely different mood hence a jump cut would be a more realistic technique. Using continuity would likely ruin the effect of the music video as it doesn't make much sense, although  it may be argued that many music videos don't make much sense which is true this isn't so fitting for the soul genre. As the genre is all about being relateable for the audience it makes more sense to do this in a realistic manner as the audience is more easily able to follow this than the mindset of the artist. Allowing them to relate to the artists work and build upon the important bonds which create success around the artist. Hence using a jump cut is conventional towards the soul genre as it is a factor which may be used so to aid soul artists in keeping their music videos following codes and conventions of their chosen genre as it enables them to tell a narrative.

Examples of jump cuts within music videos:

Various different jump cuts are made throughout Alicia Key's music video for 'Fallin' so to portray the difference between the different scenes and settings to the audience.

Jump cuts are used within Rose McGowan's music video 'RM486' so to show her changes in character.

Within Billie Piper's music video 'Something Deep Inside' jump cuts are also used for transition.

Jump cuts are also used within N Sync's 'Bye Bye Bye'

I'm also considering using a reaction shot, which shall be demonstrated as the artists lover reacts badly to her behavior, this could simply be a reaction shot through the use of a close up showing his  facial expressions allowing the audience an insight into how his feeling and what his thinking. Or it may be a midshot showing him physically reacting to her actions such as throwing a drink. Not only does this represent his feelings towards the situation but it also represents the artists. As she so carefully doesn't care about him or what his doing and is simply focusing on her night and enjoying herself it highlights to the audience how done she is with the situation representing her frustration with him due to the juxtaposition of how they are handling each others presence. The use of this technique shall be conventional towards the genre as it enables the artist to embark upon parts of the narrative, providing the audience with a deeper insight of both the actual narrative itself and the main characters themselves, hence the audience feel more involved with the story-line as well as feeling as though they are closer to the characters hence building further upon existing relationships.

Examples of reaction shots within music videos:

The Heavy 'How Do You Like Me Now?' displays various different reaction shots as the lead singer of the band is seen reacting to all of the different strange on going he finds in the forest including the cartoon likes mystical women, red ridding hood and many more.

Nelly Furtado's 'Promiscuous girl' displays a reaction shot as Nelly is on the phone to Timbaland and he reacts with his face expressions to what Nelly is saying.

JoJo's music video for 'Too Little Too Late' reactions shots are displayed as JoJo is seen reacting to her boyfriend with facial expressions which represent her anger towards him.

Sugababes 'Push The Button' displays various reaction shots for instance as the lift doors open and the man waiting for the lift sees his love interest. As he does so the audience sees his facial expressions react to this.

Another editing technique I plan to use throughout my music video is that of a black and white filter. Which shall be beneficial as I plan to use it so to help the audience differ between scenes which are taking place in the past and in the present. Therefore meaning that the audience are less likely to become confused and more easily able to follow the narrative, so that the music video is able to perform it's job of promoting both the song and the artist. This is a conventional technique as the idea of black and white representing something which has happened in the past suits the soul genre as in the past color film wasn't available hence viewing black and white film reminds people of this. Therefore indicating that what is been shown has already taken place which is conventional towards the soul genre as it hasn't really developed since the time period it was created (1950s-1960s) this is because the audience of the soul genre enjoy the classic vibes build in with the genre. This editing style has been used within a variety of different music videos including that of my chosen artist Amy Winehouse for her music video 'Back to Black' further highlighting how conventional this technique is towards the soul genre. Examples of black and white filters in music videos Hozier's 'take me to church', Michael Jackson's 'Scream' and Madonna's 'Vogue'.

Editing is a major part of the planning and production of a music video. Not only is it essential for the actual physical creation of a music video but it is also essential so to ensure that the audience is able to enjoy their viewing experience and gain from it what the artist has planned as well as allowing the music video to perform it's job benefiting the artist.

Planning setting and iconography - Miss Georgiou

Locations and iconography elements are so important within music videos for a number of reasons. Naturally a location is needed as somewhere to actually film the location is needed whether that be a studio where the production team is able to use a green screen to provide what appears to be several different locations or whether these actual locations are found to film on. It is best that more than one location is used or appeared to be used for filming as using the same location throughout the music video can make it quite dull and tedious as viewing a similar image for roughly three minutes tends to bore people. Thus loosing the audiences interest preventing the music video from doing it's job. Iconography elements (the props) are important as these help to set a scene an empty room is a location however it is these key pieces of iconography which filled it and help the production team structure the room as they please so to demonstrate the current messages, codes and conventions to the audience. Both the location and iconography used play a major role in illustrating the narrative to the audience as they make the viewing experience more realistic helping the audience to paint the images needed in their minds engaging them with the music video. Bettering their understanding, helping them to follow the music video so to ensure the receive the messages etc. which the artist is trying to bring across.

Images of sheets showing some of my groups planning for the locations and iconography which shall be used throughout our production:

I have chosen a variety of different locations to display throughout my music video so that the video is more easily able to flow as a narrative based music video (with elements of a performance based music video also) as the changes in location are able to demonstrate and represent different stages/parts to the story. Also as I stated above had I opted to use the same location throughout not only would it have become boring and uninteresting for the audience but it may also appear quite confusing as I would still need to demonstrate different time sequences so to suit the lyrics hence the audience may find this confusing as despite the different costumes changes, added characters etc the location wouldn't change hence the would likely struggle to understand the concept of the music video and why these changes where taking place.

One of the main locations used throughout my music video shall be taking place in my bedroom. I decided on this location as it would be fitting to the title of the song as the main piece of iconography which shall be in use throughout the scene shall be my bed thus matching to the title of the music video. Also the scene is able to help suit the music video to it's genre of soul as she is in her bedroom she is likely to be wearing causal/lounge clothing hence the characters costume consist of pyjamas bottoms and a comfortable top this is conventional as soul artists aren't thought of as trying as hard as artists from other genres to impress the audience based upon their appearance as their unique talent of being an artist of the soul genre is thought to be impressive enough. Unlike artists of genres such as pop who are known for showcasing really extravagant outfits within their music videos which are just completely un-relatable to the audience as these are not the type of clothing you would be able to wear in every day life; due to the costumes being both in particular and socially unacceptable. Hence this would be unconventional towards the soul genre which is thought of as being a relate able genre as the artists sing about everyday life troubles, staying away from issues which may only be considered via those in the limelight, engaging with their fame and often sing about issues which are closer to their hearts. For this same reason the idea of using a bedroom for a location is conventional towards the soul genre as it is the type of location the audience members shall be familiar with and therefore feel more at ease with the narrative of the music video when viewing it.  As I stated above without the elements of iconography filling the room this would simply be an empty room and not be a bedroom which is key as this relates back to the lyrics; "But that don't make your place safe in my bed, my bed, my bed" hence I plan to use these lyrics when filming for these scenes as these captures the essential element of there being a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals and it flows well helping the audience to follow the narrative of the music video.  I wanted to create a relationship between the song and the lyrics which was achieved with this method as often the lyrics refer back to the artists bed. The style of the bedroom is also conventional towards the soul genre when considering the colour scheme and the way in which the bedroom is decorated filled with colours mainly of black, white and grey all colours which suggest a darker/deeper more sinister tone suiting the genre as artists tend to go further with their lyrics than artists of other genres. They also provide an older feel although with other elements within the bedroom such as the wallpaper tied in with the choice of black mirror hanging on the wall, and the dresser next to the mirror which all put together create that classic soul vibe. This works because they add to create that vibe of the period when the genre was born through the early 50s to the late 60s of which they genre hasn't developed much keeping that old classic feel the audience loves hence reminders of this state are conventional towards the genre and are important to add in as they remind the audience of this helping them to place the artist in with the genre. Other lyrics I plan to use for these scenes include; "It's something I know you can't do separate sex with emotion" as again although an actual bed isn't mentioned the concept of sexual acts taking place provides connotations of not only a bed but also a bedroom as this is the stereotypical place the audience would expect this sort of act to take place hence providing the same effects and benefits which would come from the lyrics making actual reference to the bed or even the bedroom.

Shots filmed on this location will consist of the artist sitting in bed reminiscing on her past with this lover and thinking about her current situation, as well as showing her indulging in alcohol intake on her own to apply to pieces of her character fitting to the party girl image which is being captured around her, as well as suggesting how fed up and through she is with the relationship with her love interest she is singing about. It is also going to be a good shot to show her performing as she will be sitting in bed lip syncing to the lyrics as she thinks her situation through and as she walks around her room considering things through. This scene is crucial as it is the only scene which really demonstrates the artist thinking about her troubles engaged within the song without the scene the audience would miss out on this side to her not following the narrative properly. This location is so important for this scene as it wouldn't have the same effect in any of our other locations. If this was to take place at the party scene it wouldn't work with the image of him focusing on her and not leaving her alone when she's trying to enjoy herself which is presented as one of her issues with the relationship. Nor would it be effective for the 'walk of shame' scene as people are stereotyped as being more emotional and over dramatic when they are in the state that the artist will be presented within throughout said scene hence she won't be taken as seriously via the artist.

Unfortunately as we will be filming in an actual bedroom there won't be much room for crew etc as any space in the room shall be used to represent the bedroom hence anyone on set not involved within the scene will have to be moved accordingly throughout filming so not to be either in the way of filming or seen through a shot ruining the narrative and therefore the effect of the music video. As there are many mirrors located throughout the bedroom, we shall have to be extra careful when filming that anyone on set not shown on screen isn't captured through the reflection of one of the mirrors including anyone filming, any cameras or anything else involved in production that shouldn't be seen on screen for the same reasons as it will ruin the music video.

Luckily as we will be filming in a bedroom there shall be little health and safety risks, the main concern being that no one drinks the iconography of alcohol on set.

As we shall be filming inside the weather won't effect us much for this scene. Unless there happens to be manic thunder and lighting which coming through the windows and effecting the lighting inside on set and the conditions of filming then everything shall be fine.

However the weather shall be effecting the filming for the 'walk of shame' scenes which we plan to film outside as it shows the artist walking home from what appears to have been a hectic night out where it has been suggested that the artist has involved herself in heavy drinking and possibly other antics which are hinted at as this are shown in the house party scenes and the artist appears to be in the kind of state that is expected of her after this night out in particular. I plan to film these scenes by a river bank in Buckhurst Hill. Although the artist will appear to look rather messy so to represent the bad way she is in from party to hard I still want to the artist to look fairly attractive so to make the artist further appealing to the audience. Meaning that the weather can have a major impact on this as if it is to rain on the day of shooting then it is likely to flatten the artists hair and ruin her make up as well as just generally making her look rather wet and cold which it in itself isn't exactly attractive. Hence looking at the weather reports in advance of filming is important so to ensure that the weather doesn't effect the overall effect I am trying to create with my music video. I chose this location as it is one I know well hence I am able to plan what shall how the scene will work out once we're their before entering location making it easier when we come to film as well as ensuring that the location is suitable for the scenes before we arrive saving time and aggravation with having to find new locations etc. Other reasons I opted for said location include the fact that the lyrics which shall be put to these scenes make refer to a river, I wanted to form a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals shown on screen so to help the audience remember the lyrics and the image of the river becomes more forced in their head. Also as this is a deserted location it fits to the idea of the artist being in a really bad way as she is alone and in a location which most people would prefer to avoid particularly women as it is so deserted therefore making her more vulnerable and at risk as well as her the state she is in coming back from her night out. Thus highlighting the artists reckless ways to the audience as they become of careless she really is which is beneficial as it adds to the effects of the narrative enforcing the artists party girl image onto the audience. The artist will also be carrying a bottle of wine in this scene for iconography again providing the audience with more to help them follow the narrative as they pick up on how set the artist is on enjoying herself and ensuring that she has a good time as she is still drinking even now when she is on her way home and clearly not in a good way. This is important as it inputs the concept to the story-line that all is not well with the artist as she appears to be drinking alone often it is connoted that there is something troubling her. This prevents the audience from solely being on the side of the boy as he appears to be the one suffering the most whilst the artist appears to not care at all about his pain or the situation. Hence helping the audience to produce more of a bond with the artist as the feel empathy towards her. I also chose this location as I knew it was one which has a good river which is important as the lyrics at times of these scenes make reference to a river. I wanted to make reference towards the lyrics within the music video so to help the lyrics stick in the audiences mind meaning that they have a better knowledge of the lyrics and are therefore more likely to understand them and relate to them helping them to build a stronger bond with the audience. For this scene I plan to use lyrics including; "You'll never get my mind right like two ships passing in the night" whilst doing so I want to have the artist looking out over onto the river as she sings the lyrics this shall be beneficial as it urges the audience to consider the artists thoughts and feelings helping them to engage more so with the narrative as well as enhancing their understanding of it as they are watching/investigating it more clearly. Also the concept of the artist referencing to ships creates that imagery which forms connotations of water therefore suiting well with the water and implying further with the relationship between the lyrics and the visuals which I wish to really enhance so to ensure that my audience are fully engaged and gaining as best as they can from the music video.

Another scene planned is a house party scene hence we need a house location to shot in which we have organised with someone who wouldn't mind allowing us to use their summer house for the scene. This is a good location to shoot the scene of a house party as it is a stereotypical location for a house party to take place in as it is away from the main house meaning that party goers are unable to ruin the rest of the house. This implies connotations of partygoers drinking heavily and possibly experimenting with other elements such as drugs which we will be displaying throughout the scene including the use of white powder to look like cocaine. We also plan to use iconography elements such as a cigarette which adds to the party vibes as people are often seen smoking at parties hence this is conventional to the themes of a house party. Iconography elements shall also be used throughout the house party for general props which you would expect to see in a house party for instance drinks scattered about the location as well as people holding them. This suggests that a big people is taking place and people are really getting into the mood as they are leaving their alcoholic beverages about not thinking about them or looking after them properly as well as suggesting that a lot of people are there and indicating that people are having a good time and this conveys that people are drinking quite heavily and drinking alcoholic drinks at a house party is thought to be a good way to brighten the mood and make the atmosphere more fun for all involved. As well as using sweets which looks like pills as a placebo so to portray to the audience that the artist is heavily involved with a fairly negative crowd which engage her in dangerous activity. The idea of pills really enforces the state of the artist as drinking alcohol is fairly normal to most people however pills are thought to be one of the most dangerous types of drugs with people often stating of them that "they're so dangerous you don't even know what's in them". Often stories are heard of where people have found themselves in bad ways or even died due to pill abuse hence emphasising how far into the party scene the artist is as well as her reckless antics. For this scene I plan to include the following lyrics; "You recognize my every sound theres nothing new to learn" these lyrics work well with these scenes in particular as they demonstrate the artist to be behaving in ways which are likely to upset her lover. The lyrics also suit the attitude which the artist appears to have which is empahsised throughout these scenes. The attitude about not caring who is effective by her antics or who she hurts all she cares for is her own fun regardless of the consequences even if they apply a knocking effect upon her. The lyrics imply that her lover is aware of her actions and the troubles which come with that and makes it evident that she simply does not plan on changing. Reminding him that he is aware of who she is and how she behaves and if he doesn't like it then he shouldn't stick around for the downfall because she isn't willing to change for him or anyone else thus catering to this attitude. The concept of displaying this within the visuals helps the audience to really view this as a part of the artists character and not just something that she is informing for her lover for the sake of it. Hence this provides more layers to the narrative and enables the audience to come to tighter grips with it.

I also plan to film flashback scenes which shall allow the audience an insight into how the relationship once was between the pair to the audience. All of which shall take place in Woodford however between two different locations. The first shall be shoot outside as the couple are coming up to a cafe in Woodford. The other shall be inside the actual cafe itself. Outside the cafe scene the audience get to view what the couple were like when they were getting along and enjoying each others company as they are seen walking close together and appear to be happy to be together. However in the scene taking place inside the cafe the audience shall see a very different side to the pairs relationship as the artist carries herself as being rather uninterested. This contrasts the location as the idea of the couple going out together on a date suggests that things are going well for them as a couple and that they like being together thus highlighting there issues as a couple further. Lyrics for these scenes shall include; "otherwise mine's a different way A different way from where I'm going" this is beneficial as it helps to represent within the flashbacks where the relationship was being to take a turn for the worst for the artist at least. As she appears to be much less interested in the concept of a relationship or even her partner than he is with her. The lyrics are able to represent that for her she's just not in the same place his him mentally anymore. Displaying how she wants different things from what she once wanted with him. I also plan to use the lyrics; "the only time I hold your hand is to get the angle right" as again this shows to the audience that it was the artist who was suffering in the relationship not her lover whom appears to have been content staying in the relationship. It is important to really highlight these elements to the narrative so not to confuse the audience. As this shall ruin the audiences experience of the music video and may prevent them from ruining the artist in the positive light which was being aimed towards due to this negative experience. More lyrics I feel would be beneficial to use for these scenes are; "I never thought my memory of what we had could be intruded" as again this means that the lyrics and the visuals shall be relating and it helps the audience to understand that these scenes consist of flashbacks. These lyrics are able to inform the audience that there was once a time when the artist was happily involved in the relationship. Hence these lyrics are important to emphasis as if the audience miss' them then they may not pick up on this. This would be a negative aspect to the music video as it would mean that the audience were missing out on the full story thus they wouldn't be experiencing the full story which may lead to them feeling as though the narrative wasn't particularly interesting. Due to which audience members may find themselves less interested in the artist and their music/future music videos. However I am also considering not having the artist lip sync for these particular scenes as this may take away from the effects of the flashbacks as viewing the artist lip syncing when she is suppose to be spending time with her boyfriend takes away from the effects of the music video and enforces the concept that this is all pretend. It may also help the audience to engage with the narrative more so if they are to see the artist appearing as though she is involved in the on screen antics rather than appearing as though she is only there to provide the audience with inside hints/jokes or possibly even to tell them the story herself. It appears less basis-ed this way therefore resulting in the audience being more likely to take the on screen antics more seriously and really pay attention to the story-line. Creating for a better experience for them meaning that the audience is likely to become more interested in the artist in the future.

Another location I plan to use shall be the assembly hall at my school. I have chosen this location as it is one which I am easily able to gain access of, it is convention as it means that nor myself or anyone else working on the production has to travel far and is easy to find. This location works well with the set up for my chosen scene as  the scene is supposed to appear to be set in a typical 'jazz bar' when the artist is seen performing. I opted to create this scene as it shall prove to be beneficial to my music video as it provides both codes and conventions towards the genre of soul. Because the typical themes and decorated which you would expect to see in a typical jazz bar are also what you would expect to see paired with an artist of the soul genre as well as expecting to see soul artists in a jazz bar as well as jazz artists as the two genres are thought to obtain various similarities. As well as this being a good scene to provide a performance element to my music video as the audience are able to see the artist in what they believe to an artists natural element performing on stage to an audience. Hence this highlights the representation of the artist as a performer embarking upon their talent as it demonstrates how they are able to  do more than sing which is redeemed impressive as singing well in itself is thought to be a respectable talent which many people desire. So to embrace the conventional elements of a jazz bar I shall be including pieces of iconography such as a microphone with a microphone stand being conventional as this reminds the audience of the old classical period of which the soul genre suits and has never escaped from so the audience feel as though the scene is taking them back to this period in it's which as well as providing them with elements of the soul genre which they are knew to enjoy helping to fit the theme. Another iconography which shall be used throughout this scene shall be the back drop for the scene which shall be red curtains, this is conventional as it suits the concept of a typical jazz bar as the audience expect to see these curtains as they are used to having seen them throughout the jazz due to them providing that classic vibe as they appear to be rather old fashioned and the actual colouring being conventional as black, white and red are colours which are often suited to the soul genre due to them being thought of as rather classic colours. I plan to use the following lyrics for these scenes; "But I couldn't let it be I needed it as much as you did" these will be good lyrics to use when the artist is seen closing her eyes as she performs to the audience. This shall help the audience to see a slightly softer/ more like-able side to the artist as she seems to be reflecting on her time with her lover and as she acknowledges her wrong doings in their relationship she shall seem to possibly feel a bit guilty. This again  strengthens the basis for the narrative and confirms to the audience that it was the artist who ended things as she was unhappy not because her lover was aiming to make her feel as so but because she simply wasn't happy in herself and he wasn't enough for her anymore. "Yours is a familiar face" this scene shall work as a time filler scene to link back to the scene where the artist sings the following lyrics. As this was a fairly bigger section of the lyrics which all kind of linked together I wanted to keep them as so without creating a slightly more boring section of the music video which is what would have happened had I keep all of the lyrics in the same scene. I decided to take this line into this scene as it meant that the audience ere kept awake as they were seeing different things which prevents them from feeling as though they have seen everything the music video has to offer and place their attentions else where. As this is simply a performance scene although it provides the audience with something else to look at it doesn't provide them with different concepts and ideology's to think about maintaining their focus on the previous scene meaning that when they turn to it right after the brief flash of the performance scene they are able to go straight back into the mode where they left off previously.

Elements of iconography:

The artist shall be seen drinking from the wine bottle as well as swinging it around when she is pacing around her room thinking her decisions over and displaying her party girl image/lifestyle. Artists of the soul genre are recognised for enjoying drinking as they are often capture within bars etc indulging in alcoholic beverages hence this piece of iconography is conventional towards the genre.

The bed used within the scene shall connection to both the tittle and the lyrics as the reference to a bed is frequently mentioned. However the way in which the bed is used within the music video is set to contrast that of how it is mentioned within the lyrics so to highlight the strain on the relationship between the artist and her lover. This is a massive factor to the location as without the bed it couldn't be classes as a bedroom hence this is the factor which pieces the room together and makes it such a good/relatable location.

The use of make up will be used throughout the scene as the artist is seen going over her existing make up trying to get herself together representing how she is moving on from this bad relationship and getting over this boy. This is also conventional towards the genre of soul as due to the women of the genres unique look they are stereotyped to really care about their appearance and make up hence demonstrating the artist going over her make up even when she is on her own and isn't seeing anyone portrays that she has a strong care for her appearance as it is hinted that she won't be seeing anyone for this scene anyway. It is also conventional as it is a relatable element which most of the female audience members interactive with everyday, this captures the artist to be further relatable to the average soul audience member as artists are known for having a make up artist to do their make up for them hence displaying the artist doing this for herself is conventional as it portrays that relatable element to the genre which artists embark upon.

I also plan to use the use of iconography so to make it appear as though the artist is involved in social crowds which are more likely to involve themselves in the kinds of behaviour which others redeem as dangerous, uncivilised or simply plain wrong as these are the connotations which are implied when people are seen involving themselves in heavy drug abuse. As often people are known for applying this kind of conduct to their behaviour once they have indulged in drug abuse as these are often thought to be side effects from the drugs. These kinds of connotations are beneficial to the production of my music video as they aid me in providing the sort of atmosphere around the artist's character for the music video which I won't to create so to aid in the narrative of the music video helping the audience to understand how far go the artist is. Comparing her current state to how she was in the flashbacks scene is set to urge the audience to feel sympathy for the artist, as they would struggle to picture the version of the artist in the past finding herself in the same sorts of crowds involving herself in drug abuse. Drugs also provide connotations of a heavy party lifestyle. Often people are known for taking drugs so to provide them with an energy boost helping them to stay up for later and really involve themselves with typical partying antics such as dancing so to keep them going for the night and supposedly really enjoy themselves. Hence this adds further to the theme of the artist having found herself into this party girl way of life. Thus helping the audience to consider what life has become like for the artist now and how she got to be this way. Coursing audience members to question whether there is more to the narrative that meets the eye and whether this boy has done something really terrible so enforce her change. Which is beneficial as without this added element the audience are more likely to feel their empathy for the boy. Although most of the audience shall be aware that this is only a story and although the artist is playing herself she isn't actually portraying her true self but a projected version of herself so to create an interesting music video. But there are still likely to be viewers out there who view the artists portrayal of herself to be an accurate one. Which can naturally be damaging to her reputation as she appears to be this cold hearted character who doesn't care about hurting others feelings and involves herself in dangerous and illegal activity. With a bad reputation it is less likely that the artist is to receive success as less people shall like therefore meaning that they won't be routing for her wanting her to do well, hence making it harder for the artist to find people enjoying her music as they won't want to as they recognise it as being her work which they don't want to listen to as it's hers. Hence portraying the artist to be a nice girl who has had a hard time make the audience like her more as she appears to be someone they could get along with as well as the added impact of her being more relatable as lot of people feel that they have had a hard time or been hard done by hence making this like her more as they feel they have this common ground therefore assuming that they have a better understanding of her due to this shared experience as well as thinking that she is more like them which also urges them to like her more as the thought of someone like themselves doing well makes them happy as they would love this kind of success for themselves and feel that they deserve it as they want it for themselves and it  provides them with hope. As drugs are not only illegal but they are also harmful and dangerous I won't be using real drugs for the production of my music video. Instead I have opted to use sweets which shall act as a placebo for drugs and tackle in powered so to act as a step in for cocaine.

The artist will be shown having a cigarette conforming to codes and conventions which you would expect of a house party hence being beneficial as it makes the scene appear more realistic as the audience are noticing things which they would expect to see at house parties they have been to themselves. Which not only makes the narrative more believable to the audience but it also helps them to relate to it as well as the artist as appears to be someone who experiences a similar experience to life as them thus building upon the relationship between the artist and the audience.

Drinks shall be scattered around the location at the house party, on the sides, on tables even on the floor as well as in peoples hands. This is beneficial as it helps enforce the concept of this being a big party where people are getting so into the mood they don't care about their manners or the mess they are surrounded by. As they aren't bothering to put drinks in the bin when they are done with them etc. This works in the same way as the cigarettes reminding the audience of aspects of a house party they would expect to see in such a sense building upon the bond between the audience and the artist in the same manner.

Another piece of iconography which shall be used in the bedroom scene is a photo frame which shall show a photo of the artists old flame. Upon seeing this she shall placed the photo frame down this is important as it indicates the direction of the narrative to the audience fairly early on. Which is beneficial as it prevents them from feeling loss or uninterested with the narrative and therefore missing out on the effects and experience planned by the artist preventing the music video from doing it's job. The photo frame itself also demonstrates to the audience how strong the pairs relationship once was as the artist had a photo of him in her room which appears to be quite a personal thing. This contrast between how the relationship is now and how it was once courses the audience to feel sad as it is quite a saddening thought that two people can go from being so close to almost nothing to each other. This likely to urge them to think about someone they were once close to which they no longer speak with. This makes the audience feel as though they are closer with the artist as they feel able to relate to them which is another way in which the artist imprints on their relationship with the audience.

Cutlery shall be seen in the scene whereby the artist and her lover as in the cafe. Although it doesn't really impact the narrative or represent anything to do with the artist it is still important. Because you would expect to see cutlery in a cafe hence this makes the experience of the music video more believable preventing the audience from fighting the experience.

Phones shall be used by actors throughout the music video in scenes such as the couple walking to the cafe and the house party as mobile phone particularly iphone have become a normal part of everyday life. Therefore what the audience would expect to see so to make this a realistic viewing experience for them. Which is essential as it improves the audiences experience and helps them to feel as though they are more able to relate to the artist thus making the audience more likely to purchase into the artists music.

Another piece of iconography which shall be used throughout the production of my music video will be the use of a microphone and a microphone stand within the jazz bar scene. This is essential as it is what the audience expects to see in such an environment therefore without it it would appear as though something was missing. Ultimately ruining the effect of the music video preventing the audience from feeling any sort of connection with it.

Planning artist image - Miss Georgiou

Although music videos are most recongnised for promoting the song they are made for as well as it often being viewed as their main job, music videos are also important for representing the artist. Even if the artist doesn't appear much or even at all within the music video the video is still thought to be a representation of them as it is thought to be their work which they have a lot of creative input in as well as the video putting an image to the artists song/lyrics hence the audience picture the artist with this. Also if the artist decides not to display much of themselves within the music video it connotes a fair bit about them. Hence music videos are important as they provide the artist with a platform to represent/promote themselves in a creative fashion almost as they please when considering restrictions from record labels, censorship etc.If a music video was produced which the general public where to perceive as boring this would reflect negatively upon the artist as the music video is branded with their image hence being created as a part of their image as a 'star' reflecting back to Dyer's theory of them being seen and treated as a product rather than a person.

Many artists have been able to use their music videos so to help them portray differences within their career style:

Here is an image of lead singer Alex Turner from indie rock band 'The Arctic Monkeys' from their music video 'Crying Lightning' 2009:

Here is another image of Alex Turner from the bands music video 'R U Mine?' 2012:

The two images represent contrasting styles highlighting the turn in the bands change as they developed through the years hence this was something they wanted to bring across as it showed the development they had under-gone to they're audience as was able to help them to reach out to new audience members they were aiming towards. Music videos are a good way for artists to take control of the publicity they receive as provide their own message to the media away from the tabloids. Often artists such as Michael Jackson take this opportunity to hit back at the tabloids.

 Planning my artists image

Planning my artist image was important as I wanted to create an image around the artist which was conventional towards the soul genre, however I wanted it to appear natural and by no means over done, as this would take away from the quality and experience of the music video as well as capturing a rather comedic feel which would make the music video appear less professional creating a mockery of the artist. The stereotypical image of an artist of the soul genre being one which suits the image of women throughout the 1950s- 1960s in America as this is the time period in which the soul genre generates of which it hasn't developed much as it's fan enjoy the genres elements of being classic hence portraying women within the soul genre throughout this style is conventional as it refers back to areas of the genre which the soul audience know and love. This is beneficial as it helps the artist to aim their work towards their audience ensuring that they are producing work of a quality which their audience shall be interested in as they are able to use the codes and conventions capturing the genre as a guideline.

Examples of how this image can be recaptured within modern times:

Mise en scene is a major part to consider when planning the artists image as there are so many elements within it. As inspiration taken from Amy Winehouse I decided that it won't be a good idea to focus on the artist's hair so to conform to the soul genre however I opted against following Winehouse completely and copying her infamous 'beehive' hairstyle as this was somethin uniquely recongised to the artist which wouldn't suit many people hence playing the artist myself I knew that it would appear rather comical on myself. So I decided that it would be a good idea to have a big back combed yet smaller than Winehouse's quiff as this wouldn't appear over the top whilst still fitting to the genre.

I have also decided that as the artist I should display the kind of music you would expect of soul artists so like that of Amy Winehouse and Duffy I shall wear fairly basic quite plain make up with the added extrvagant extras which you would expect from soul artists including the winged eyeliner, rosy cheeks and red lips. I shall be putting a modern twist on this however as it would be hard to suit it perfectly to the 50s/60s which the conventional soul looks generates from and keep it looking professional so I deicded to go for a modern spin on the look which will also suit more to modern views. This shall be achieved by simply not exaggerating the make up so much so slightly smaller winged eyeliner like that of Duffy.

Costume is yet another important element of mise en scene which conflicts to the artists representation. As they will be a range of different scenes the artist shall showcase a variety of different scenes show to highlight this and keep the audience from getting confused via the narrative. This all provides for the chance to demonstrate more about the artist through the use of costume for instance at the house party scene the artist shall be wearing jeans, pumps and a dressy top which consists of a nice pattern which suits to that of the genre with an almost corset styled pattern down the middle the top is convnetional as it displays elements of the kind of styled clothing you would expect women of the period to wear yet it doesn't appear dated as it is still well styled to todays fashoin and shall be woren in a modern way paired with the rest of her costume. This demonstrates the unique style and ways of the artist to the audience helping them to set her to the soul genre in their minds hence showcasing that she isn't just setting herself to the soul genre as she is able to sing within that tone and can make money from doing so as well as achieveing fame but that she has a genuine passion for it which the audience respects and helps them to build a relationship with her through. Hence once the audience feel this relationship they are more likely to remember the artist as they felt this connection with her keeping her relevant in the minds of the audience for longer as well as making them more likely to purchase her albums as they become bigger fans of her and unconsicously hope for her to achieve higher levels of success.

The image I am creating for the artist helps to present her as rebelious, unique, different, dangerous, exciting and a party girl all of which is relevant and important to both the music video and the narrative we are basing the music video around as it builds upon the storyline and creates an interest in the character as she appears more than just the usual girl the audience is use to seen being portrayed throughout the media the typical 'pretty blonde cheerleader/prom queen type.' Hence they are intergued via her as she appears to be something fresh which they are excited by therefore they want to discover more about her. Benefiting the representation of the artist as they message is then emboided upon her real life personna aiding her in maintaining a general interest from the audience.

The typical image of young females which the audience are used to being demonstrated throughout the media:

For 'the walk of shame' scene the artist shall be wearing a fairly short party dress to highlight that she has been going out partying this suggests that this is something which has been being involving herself in a lot of late conveying her as this lost party girl creating yet further interest as well as conveying hints of sympthy for the audience to pick up on as they wonder why the artist is putting herself in postions where she finds herself in such states time and time again. This scene will be key for conveying the mental state of the artist through the use of her apperance as we will be able to mess up her hair, make her dress in a rather permissucous fashion with smudged make up all of which conotes someone who isn't exciting the states they find themselves in as much as they make out. All of which is conventional towards the genre of soul because the genre is recognised for it's artists singing about subjects which are closer to their hearts and have a lot more meaning to them as well as providing narratives which are more relateable to the average person as they don't focus on their own fame or the advances which come with this as well as keeping things closer to their lives before they achieved this fame. This also adds further to the storyline as it displays the strengths of the artists old fame love for her as they are still so obsessed with her when she so clearly doesn't care for him and is in such an unattractive state that it is questionable how anyone could love her. The concept of the artist providing a narrative behind their music video also urges the audience to rememeber them more fondly as they were invited into a different experience with the artist one which they likely hadn't gone down before.

Although the elements of Mise en scene which I plan to use for the representation of my artist shall be used throughout they shall be highlighted further throughout the party scene and the performance scene. This works well as it contrasts that of the apperance of the artists throughout other scenes. For instance it signifes the much cuter and sweeter image the artist illustrates throughout flashback scenes creating a jutxaposition between that and the relationship between the artist and her love interest now which helps the audience to more clearly understand the struggles between the two. As well as contrasting that of the 'walk of shame' scene as she appears to be able to care for herself more and appears much more attractive and together. This is important as it conveys that the state of the audience within the scene is something which she has found herself in over time coursing the audience to want to think about what may have happened to take her here creating a further relationshp between the audience and the music video as they find themselves in engaging with it more as they desire answers for their questions. A memember of our group has agreed to do my make up for the music video which is the best case scenerio as it means that we shall have someone who is relyable as we know that she will make sure she turns up, on time and is trying to her best to capture the looks we are hoping for as well as having someone who truly understands the different perceptions of the artists we are trying to create as she has been involved in meetings and dicussions involving the topic.

Within the performance scene with the artist shall be performing on a stereotypical soul/jazz themed stage hence fitting codes and conventions towards the genre she will be fitted more so to the genre. So less of the modern styled make up and a lot closer to that of the time as it wonn't look strange in the setting meaning it would stand out and take away from the effectives and efforts put into creating the world set within the music video for the audience to enter as they would become so focused upon this. Working within the same manner if a character was holding a bag one minute and then isn't without the audience viewing them put it down it becomes distracting and reminds the audience of the fact that what they are experienceing isn't real ruining the effects of it. However in this scene these added make up extras will simply add to the conventional themes of the setting and location hence being benefical as the audience are more able to fit the artist to the chosen genre as they view them enjoying themselves in such an element. As well as the artist having an opputrunity to prove to the audience that they really are what they claim to be without this they may be viewed as a fraud hence the audience would loose respect for them as an artist. Therefore the artist also needs to wear something which would suit this scene so we have opted for the artist to wear a black off the shoulder dress from another audience member again this is another reliable source as we know we will reiceve the dress on time in good condition as the team member has the motivation of wanting the music video to do well. This is convnetional as it displays and captures that image women of the period demonstrated of wearing slightly revealing and suggestive clothing yet not showing too much as the dress is fairly long keeping that classy image connected with the genre and period in tact.

I also plan to represent the artist via a voyuersitic approach. This suits the lyrics as Winehouse refers to a previous relationship with a lover which has now become on her part an entirely sexual one; "Wish I could say it breaks my heart like you did in the beginning" Winehouse is informing the lover she is singing to in the narrative that for her this relationship no longer contains an emotional hold over her. Hence the artist is portraying herself as a fairly sexual character therefore it would be beneficial to portray this element to the character within the music video as it creates a relationship between the lyrics and the music video, thus helping the audience to understand the artists work more easily therefore creating a further connection with both the artist and their work. One way in which the artist shall be portrayed through this theme is through the use of close up shots of the artists face where she looks attractive therefore aiding this representation. This is a technique which is widely used throughout the music industry and has been for many years although close are ups are almost always demanded via record labels they are not always used for this reason. This does not mean that I am sort on inspiration as to how I shall create this look as Winehouse herself opted for in throughout a variety of her music videos. As have done other female artists.

Amy Winehouse 'Stronger than me'

Amy Winehouse 'Back to Black'

Amy Winehouse 'Tears dry on their own'

Examples of other artists:

Billie Piper 'Walk of life'

Britney Spears 'Toxic'

Planning the artists important too the finest detail is crucical as not only could it damage the effects of the artists representation within the narrative and therefore the narrative but it can also apply negatives on the artists image within the industry outside of the music video. However it isn't only important to prevent damage but it is also a good element to consider when trying to trying fit to codes and conventions and represent the artist in certain ways helping to achieve a relationship of sorts between the audience and the artist whilst also possibly building  upon the artists likeability.

Lyric analysis - Miss Georgiou

Purpose of analysing the lyrics to my music video:

Analysing the lyrics to the song for my music video is important when creating my music video as without a sufficient understanding of the song I would likely fail in creating a suitable music video to match it. As my lack of understanding would be evident because the music video may not fit to the song, a contrast which they may pick up on ruining the effect and therefore the experience of the music video for the audience thus failing to commit to it's job.

Although the song is technically classed as a 'love song' as the narrative to the song follows the idea of Winehouse singing about a relationship with a lover there are various different route love songs can enter. For instance at the beginning of our music video when we first analysed the lyrics we was focusing on the typical concept of a love song revolving around the idea of the destruction of a relationship whereby the narrator i.e the singer is distraught about the break up and struggling to come to terms with its end. However analysing the lyrics further I came to the realisation that Winehouse was in fact informing her audience that she was fine about the break up. Hence re-planning for the production of my music video needed to be put in place as continuing to shoot ahead with the ideas created in the thought process matching the idea that Winehouse was broken up over the state of her relationship wouldn't have suited. Portraying the artist to be crying indicating that she is upset about the issue would juxtapose the lyrics which would led to confusing the audience therefore making them loose interest as they are unable to uncover the narrative and decide that their time could be spent better else where as it simply appears that the music video hasn't be adapted around the lyrics properly. Not only would this damage the success of the music video and possibly the song for the video but also the artists creditability. As the audience begin to question whether the artist has really thought about their music video or whether they've simply seen it as an opportunity to promote themselves and done it as something they thought they had to. Hence the audience may feel that Winehouse isn't a true solid artist but is simply in the music industry for the money and fame hence loosing further respect for her. When in the public eye artists or stars have to consider their actions very carefully as they work more as products rather than human beings (following the theory of Dyer) and the littlest thing can suggest a lot about their worth to the general public hence it is important that a music video which goes down in an artists history, viewed and analysed for years to come and in Winehouse's case even in her death highlights the importance of getting a music video right and making sure it matches to the lyrics so to convey the right image around the star.

Original lyric annotations:

As you can see our varied understandings and opinions of the lyrics tied together to become fairly jumbled up, confusing and unclear hence we decided to print the lyrics again and start fresh with our new shared understanding of the lyrics whilst keeping ideas which we all agreed on and pictured working to the true representation of the song and the lyrics.

Analysing the lyrics of my chosen song benefits the production of my music video as it means that I shall have a better understanding of the song and what the artist is trying to bring across with it for instance the meaning behind certain lyrics or even messages hidden within them or concepts. This further analysis helps to make sure that I portray an accurate music video so to suit the song as well as aiding me in helping to chose certain iconography elements etc. For instance as the song I have chosen is called 'In my bed' and makes reference to a bed throughout the music video I decided that it would be a good idea to use one. Making this reference towards the lyrics throughout the video urges the audience to pay further attention towards the lyrics. This deeper analysts also aids in deciding whether there is a particular narrative behind the lyrics which should be told. As the lyrics inform Winehouse is singing about a current lover whom she know longer feels 'that spark' for; "Wish I could say it breaks my heart like you did in the beginning" hence analysing these lyrics it becomes apparent that Winehouse misses feeling a certain way towards this person and is saddened but how numbing their love has become but she doesn't necessarily miss them or even miss obtaining feeling that way towards them. This encouraged me to consider how we could portray clearly throughout the music video this past to the relationship and the juxtaposition between how it was then and how it is now.

The concept of representing a clear identification between the present and the past enabled me to decide that it would be a good idea to create 'flashback' scenes so to inform the audience of the pairs past. However I didn't want this to become confusing for the audience where they were unable to make clear cuts between what was the past and what was the present as this would ruin the effective of the music video and course them to loose interest. Thus I opted to use black and white filters so to highlight the flashback scenes to the audience by using them for these scenes and these scenes only. Which provides other benefits to my music video being a conventional technique towards the genre as the idea of viewing something in black and white provides connotations of something being in the past due to the fact that in the past colour filming wasn't available. This works in a conventional manner as the soul genre which was created in the early 50s to the late 60s hasn't developed much since it's beginning hence it provides it's audience with an almost glimpse back into the past therefore the black and white filters conform to this.

Another reason re-planning needed to take place was that we had highlighted using a colour scheme order what lines we wanted to use for different scenes yet as we applied a deeper analysis we found that different ideas were developing which appeared to provide a much better experience for the audience that the existing ones. At this point we only had three scenes to go back and fourth between which I didn't think was a good idea, as it meant that throughout the duration of the music video the scene would have seen the same three scenes too many times to be able to keep them interesting throughout, thus creating an negative viewing experience for the audience which would tarnish the artists reputation. So to improve on this I came up with the idea of applying another 'performance scene' so that the audience didn't become too use to the idea of the artist performing in her bedroom as well as providing the audience with new images so to keep their experience fresh and exciting. Said idea was also another way for me to keep the music video conforming to the codes and conventions of my chosen genre as I opted to have this scene in a jazz bar, which suits the genre as often connections between the two genres are made as they share many similarities such as the style, forming with the old classic vibes and the style in which they are known for performing. I.e. on a grand appearing stage, stereotypically backed with a red curtain, a classic microphone in it's stand and band members standing around as artists for both genres are recognised for performing with live bands rather than using backing tracks. We will also be using a spot light as our light for this scene as well as low key lighting around it so to enhance the effects of the spotlight this is effective as it really draws the audiences attention to the audience as well as being conventional as it is what you would expect to see in this type of setting which is expected from the genre. Because both genres are known for providing the audience with artists of better quality. This also conforms with the idea that they invest more into their lyrics than other artists from different genres such as pop or dance who are more likely to focus more so on the beat as their music is more about providing their audience with a good time rather than providing them more a personal connection which effects them on a deeper level.

The annotations gained from reading further into the lyrics inform that the singer wasn't afraid to embrace her sexuality; "Wish I could say it breaks my heart." here the artist is informing her lover that she no longer desires for him as anything further than a physical act hence applying a voyeuristic approach would suit the artist as in this narrative of the lyrics the female character is portrayed to be more emotionally removed and physically active than her male counter part which is subversive as often within all applications of the media the female character is portrayed as caring more about a deeper relationship which runs further than the physical. Thus the artist is representing herself in a rather sexualised manner as such a voyeuristic approach to her representation is already taken through the lyrics. So it would be beneficial to represent this within the visuals in the music video enabling the audience to be able to follow the lyrics as easy as they view a relationship between the lyrics and what is happening on screen. Without showing this relationship the audience may simply take the lyrics to be about the other antics on screen meaning that they are obtaining a lesser experience of the song blocking them from building upon their relationship with the artist. The voyeuristic approach is a technique which has been used throughout music videos showcasing female artists as well as female bands for a long time and is very effect for a variety of reasons. This is often down through the use of a close up which is one of the ways I plan to showcase the technique using a variety of different close ups (cinematography) so to enforce this concept. For instance it demonstrates to the audience the attractiveness and therefore sex appeal of the artist therefore encouraging the audience to grow a further like towards them as they find them attractive also encouraging them to find remember them than they would other artists as they feel this extra connection with the artist. Said technique also builds upon the form of a relationship between the artist and the audience as they feel closer to the artist as the artist is physically closer to the lense which represents that the artist is trying to build a connection with them and wants to become closer to their audience (fans) hence the audience grow further admiration for the artist as they appear to be a nicer person.

examples of voyuersitic approaches to women through the use of close ups within the industry:

Christian Aguilera 'Genie in a bottle' 1999

Billie Piper's 'Day & Night' 2000

Ciara '1 2 step' 2004

Britney Spears 'Hold it Against me' 2011

New lyric annotations:

For the lyrics; "Everything is slowing down river of no return" I thought it would be a good/beneficial idea to place the artist in a scene where she is near a river working in the same way that it would be having her in her bedroom/on her bed for the scenes whereby the lyrics refer to the artists bed. Because of this is made sense to capture this as a part of the 'walk of shame' scene as it meant that the artist would be able to take a questionable route home insinuating her reckless antics helping the audience to understand more of the character building upon their relationship forming a bond which creates for a better more relateable experience for the audience.

Analyzing the lyrics not only helped when making decision as to what to include within the music video e.g various elements of iconography as well as the representation to provide of the artist but also how to tie to music video together. A transition between the different shots and scenes within the music video needs to be made involving editing. Hence looking into the lyrics further for a deeper understanding aided in these choices as I was able to notice codes and conventions of the genre and various of ways in which we could style the music video so to suit. For example due to my further knowledge of the genre I decided that one way to transfer through the different scenes would be with the use of a fade. Preferably in use with a scene from the performance section of the music video whereby the artist is performing at a sort of jazz bar. This would benefit as it works well with this scene as it the fade provides similar connotations to said scene illustrating the idea of going back in time and recreating the soul genres infamous classic vibes which it's audience is known for adoring. The fade works well with it as it aids to this concept of a grand performance as the audience are familiar with the fade technique in this sort of environment/situations as well as it being able to well represent it's counter part of the concept of a show ending as the curtain closes or the lights fade and the audience is left with nothing but a black atmosphere filling the stage.

Through studying various other music videos belonging to the genre I was able to note how different artists where applying the sense of the soul genre being presented as relateable to it's audience hence there was little reference to fame or fortune throughout the artists work, nor where there the use of big flashy items or techniques, nor was there much use to special effects or CGI. Thus displaying the image of the genre being relateable as artists kept their work to standards which the audience would be familiar with and didn't alienate themselves from their viewers via portraying themselves in such a way that they appear unreachable as they surround themselves within a completely different adaption of the world. From this I decided that it would also be a good idea to use continuity editing. Because it helps to illustrate the narrative behind the music video and benefits it in order of it's flow. As well as the fact that it is an editing technique which the audience doesn't notice hence not intimidating them with these grand movements blocking the audience from feeling as though they can relate to the artist.

Both the artists body language and body positioning  (Mise en scene) are key elements to telling the narrative behind the music video. In order to represent the idea that the artist is more comfortable with her sexuality than some would like she shall be seen getting close to her male encounters throughout the music video. Through the use of both body language and body positioning as she shall be positioned getting very close to them whilst her body language shall represent how comfortable she is with them highlighting her sexual urges.

Other pieces of Mise en scene including costume, hair and make up have been addressed as a major part of our the planning for the production of the music video. Mainly because a large section of codes and conventions made throughout music videos which are most notably picked up upon as they are the easiest for the audience to view as the human eye as been trained through various instances of the media to notice others appearances. Hence I have decided to apply the codes and conventions of the soul genre which suit the appearance of a soul female artist which means suiting the artist to the kind of appearance expected of women in the 1950s/1960s as this was the period in American when the genre was conformed which the genre hasn't developed much from as the audience are known for loving the classical elements to the genre thus keeping them alive in the genre with it's lack of adaptions to society's modern ways. However the style adopted via the artist shall be a more modern take on the style of the female within said period throughout some scenes as it would appear strange to see a girl dressed within this way throughout her everyday life in every scene and would take away from the effects of the music video. However this artist won't display this modern take within the performance scenes taking place at the jazz bar as this is a scene where it would be seen as more socially acceptable for someone to dress within this manner. This will be beneficial as it is the perfect environment for me to showcase codes and conventions towards the genre in therefore helping me to cater towards the desires and needs of my chosen audience.

Hidden meanings also play a big part within my music video as engaged with the lyrics the narrative clearly represents the tale of a woman usually a man for her sexual desires which is unusual as stereotypically throughout the media it is often portrayed to be the man behaving in such a way. Often illustrated to be beasts who harm the sweet and innocent females they toy with yet Winehouse challenges this view by taking on the stereotypical role for a man and putting a man in the place where society would usually place her. Not only is Winehouse's lyrics subversive in a social sense but also in the sense that it doesn't fit the codes and conventions of her chosen genre of soul. As I have stated the soul genre hasn't developed a great time since it's creation meaning that even the social events of the time period still fill the genre so to suit. During said time period women were thought to be an inferior sex compared with men who were seen as the bread winners. They looked after the family and dealt with any business which was deemed only suitable for a man (which was the bulk) however this did come at a cost to the women of the home as it meant that they suffered at a lack of respect or ability, women found themselves being controlled and unable to live the lives they wanted for themselves and they were restricted via the rules set a foot for them via their male controllers. Resulting in them feeling as though they were less than their husbands and often being accepting of behaviour such as adultery and being used in such a manner suiting the narrative to the music video. Thus Winehouse portraying herself a woman in such a way is her way of indicating to her audience that women deserved to feel just as empowered as men and are capable of thinking, feeling and behaving within the same mannerism. Winehouse is encouraging her female audience to embrace their sexuality and not feel suffocated by the males they find themselves surrounded by supressing them, making them feel as though these urges are something which they should compress and that only a man has the right to think, feel and act in such a way. This remains a hidden message as words along these lines are never actually stated yet they are insinuated through the artists choice of narrative and her picking of the characters.

The idea of the artist being illustrated to be this kind of party girl is linked in with the idea of her being able to involve herself in more casual sex: "I don't wanna meet your mother any time, I just wanna rip your body over mine" is linked with the concept of her going out and being able to enjoy herself often as stereotypically women who are able to indulge in causal sex are thought to behave in the stereotypical party girl mannerism also. Which also suits the genre as the image suggests that the character consumes large amounts of alcohol as a part of her partying antics which is conventional towards the genre as throughout the soul genre artists are recognised for drinking often as it connotes back to the period the genre was established. As this was a time where people where less health conscious and often less educated on matters of their health. Therefore not looking after themselves so much meaning that they would frequently drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes throughout the day. Hence this shall be introduced throughout my music video as the artist is seen drinking alone in her bedroom as well as at the party scene, including various other people attending the party and the 'walk of shame' will suggest that the artist has been drinking as it fits the stereotypical image society has created to assume for people they see walking home in the early hours of the morning, wearing rather dressed up clothing yet looking a bit of a mess. The alcohol used throughout my music video shall be demonstrated as a piece of iconography hence being another element of Mise en scene showcased throughout. Said piece of iconography has been used by various different artists of the soul genre in their previous music videos including Winehouse herself for her music video 'Stronger than me'. Viewing this within works of artists such as Winehouse informs me that this is a beneficial technique as it allows me to view for myself how it effects the audience as well as clearly demonstrated it as a successful convention towards the genre as it is used by such successful artists such as Winehouse and it is something which I am easily able to pick up on.

Looking further into the lyrics has ensured that I am creating a music video which provides an accurate representation of the song the artist is promoting. As well as comforting me in the knowledge that I have best suited my music video towards my audience because I have looked into the codes and conventions of the genre and studied them, from their I have been able to take out interviews and questionnaires so to discover what it is the audience likes/dislikes about the soul genre all information of which I have been able to put into use to create an appropriate and effective music video.
